The Brilliant Artificial Intelligence of 1980
To the untrained eye, the four ghosts in Pac-Man and its modern WebGL adaptations like Pac-Hero appear to wander randomly through the maze. In truth, each ghost operates on distinct mathematical targeting algorithms designed to corner the player through complementary behavioral archetypes.
1. Blinky (Red): The Direct Chaser
Blinky's target tile is always the exact tile Pac-Man currently occupies. He takes the shortest possible path without hesitation and accelerates as remaining pellets decrease (the infamous 'Cruise Elroy' state). Evading Blinky requires making sharp right-angle corner turns, as Pac-Man turns slightly faster than ghosts through tight intersections.
2. Pinky (Pink): The Ambusher
Pinky's target tile is located four tiles ahead of Pac-Man's current direction. While Blinky chases your tail, Pinky cuts off your escape corridor. When fleeing Blinky, never run down straight avenues where Pinky can intercept your forward trajectory; loop around central obstacle blocks instead.
3. Inky (Cyan): The Flanker
Inky's movement is the most mathematically complex: his target tile is determined by calculating a vector from Blinky to two tiles ahead of Pac-Man and doubling that vector. This creates unpredictable pincer maneuvers when Blinky is close, making Inky lethal during open-field navigations.
4. Clyde (Orange): The Coward
Clyde targets Pac-Man directly until he comes within eight tiles of distance. Once within eight tiles, his AI switches modes, retreating toward his designated home corner in the bottom-left. This periodic retreat frequently opens an emergency escape hatch when you appear hopelessly trapped in lower maze corners.
